Review #1: Splatterhouse

Did you guess it? It was Splatterhouse!
Clue explanations
Remake of 1988 game - original Splatterhouse released in 1988
Very violent - watch a video, explains itself!
Jim Cummings voices a main role - The Terror Mask!

Splatterhouse is an incredibly violent game, and wins most violent game of the decade. While it hasn't got the most in-depth story it is certainly fun to play. The splatter kills are absolutely brilliant because of the sheer goriness of them. I mean, if pulling out someones kidneys isn't gory you have no soul.

The game begins with you in beserker mode which Rick (the main character) is too weak for at the beginning, but can eventually be used again. You gain much stronger attacks and grow blades out of your arms to make it much more gruesome.

Speaking of Rick, I haven't really explained the story much. Basically, in the simplest and most un-story wrecking way possible, Rick and his girlfriend Jen go to Dr. Wests mansion for science or something. The screen flashes and Rick is led on the floor bleeding. The terror mask speaks to Rick and says they can save Jenny. Rick puts the mask on and becomes the monster guy.

The game is split up into phases, and after about 2 you face a main boss and are teleported somewhere. Most of the bosses are fought in parts and are very fun and scary. The kill animations for these bosses are very clever and grisly.

Along the game there are some mini-bosses that you see quite often throughout the game, although there are different, more powerful versions. The kill animations for these ones get quite monotonous compared to the main ones but are still really cool.

During each teleportation you can begin to piece together the story and view what you missed when the screen flashed at the start. It does get quite interesting the more you get into it, so you will want to finish the game.

During each phase you will need to collect pieces of pictures of Jen she has left for clues. Some of these are in linear places, but most are in hidden places or behind columns you just walked past so you need to look around to find these.

There is also a mode called Survival Arena which I have not tried yet. Oh, and another very cool thing is that you can unlock the old Splatterhouse games from the arcade which is something if you are into nostalgia, and also the actual game switches up into 2d sometimes, which is a very call homage to the originals.

Splatterhouse is a very fun, and violent, game that has cool boss battles, a great metal soundtrack, collectibles so you won't get bored, good combat and an interesting story. The graphics are also very nice. Overall I will give the game 8.5/10. It is awesome fun, but the repeating splatter kills and awkward camera are just a bit disappointing. But you should get it.
